Burping or Belching is the act of expelling gas from the stomach or intestine out through the oral cavity. Eructation is the medical word for belching.
Mostly, it is something not to worry about. But if you experiencing burp more frequently than you ever have in the past and if it is causing you any discomfort, there might be certain factors at play.
CAUSES OF BURPING
Following are the few causes of excessive burping
Indigestion can also cause smelly burps. When food stays a longer period of time in the intestines, it produces and gives rise to foul-smelling gases that then come out as a burp.
2. FOOD INTOLERANCE:
Excessive burping can also be a sign of celiac disease (intolerance to gluten) or lactose intolerance. Smelly burps accompanied by cramping after eating a certain food indicate that your body cannot tolerate that particular food. Other causes of food intolerance include A) Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) B) colitis and C0 Crohn`s Disease.
A condition which slows down the motility of food through the digestive system. Injury to the nerves that control the gastric muscles due to diabetes mellitus or an esophageal and gastric surgery could lead to this condition. These people experiencing regular burps that smell like a rotten egg.
4. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME:
Irritable bowel syndrome is the irritation to gastric mucosa, causing belching along with abdominal pain, bloating and constipation or diarrhea (mostly). These symptoms are intermittent.
Gastric lining inflammation could also lead to excessive burp. This might be due to some infection, long-term use of drugs like NSAIDs (painkiller) and autoimmune diseases. It may cause nausea, abdominal pain, hiccups, vomiting blood (like coffee grounds color and bloody stool.

6. GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD):
GERD is the most serious cause of chronic, excessive. When the lower end of the esophagus doesn’t close properly, it may results in refluxing of food from stomach including acid into the upper part esophagus, causing you to burp. It may also cause heartburn, coughing and other symptoms.
7. EATING CERTAIN FOODS
Certain foods are the cause of frequent and excessive burping, which include: Vegetables: cauliflower, broccoli. Sprouts, cabbage, asparagus and whole grains that the body cannot digest effectively.
Fruits like apricots, apples, peaches, and peach, they all containing sorbitol, which is tough to digest.
Some drugs are irritant to gastric mucosa resulting in excessive burping like Aspirin and other NSAIDs Steroids Oral contraceptive pills (birth control pills) Antibiotics ( azithromycin, co-amoxiclav)
9. SWALLOWING TOO MUCH AIR WHILE EATING
Too much eating or talking while eating and using a straw to drink can allow air to ingest through the digestive system. Since air doesn’t belong to there, the digestive system expels it through a burp.
10. PSYCHIATRY ILLNESS
It is believed that belching can also be caused by psychological disorder like anxiety or depression. In fact, frequent belching may also be one of the first signs of depression. Nervousness may cause to swallow too much air. These people need a psychiatric assistant.
Lifestyle changes: Weight losing, walking. Eating slower and smaller bites and drinking plenty of fluids.
